LOCATION
This year’s outdoor Irish Festival in Baltimore City is in the Canton Waterfront Park, in one of the hottest areas in the Greatest City in America. A beautiful view of the Inner Harbor to the northwest and Fort McHenry to the southwest will give festival attendees a great experience. It is a free event in this City park, which is less than a mile away from the I-95 corridor to New York, Philadelphia and Washington. It’s also within a mile or two of the Inner Harbor. The Water Taxi stops at the park along its route in the Inner Harbor, allowing for easy access from downtown and Fells Point. Two blocks away, O’Donnell Square in Canton is home to many pubs and restaurants with an affinity for Ireland and its culture.
The Canton area was developed from the plantation of merchant seaman, John O’Donnell, in the late 1800's by his son, Columbus O’Donnell, William Patterson and Peter Cooper. The land was sold for expanding waterfront industrial uses and housing to support the blue-collar workers, most notably, Welsh, Irish, German and Polish. Many of the rowhouses and churches built on the hills and fields of late 19th century Canton still survive, and with them, a diverse community of people who, like their immigrant ancestors, believe that the City is great enough to accommodate them all.
